CUSTOMER REVIEWS
I feel a little silly starting another review with a caveat about the price, but the scalping issue with third-party sellers is really getting out of hand. I bought it at $43.99 from Amazon. As of June 2015 it's brand-new, so Amazon or another reputable seller will have them in stock again for approximately that price.Ultra Magnus comes with a micromaster-style buddy-bot, a couple of guns and a collector's card. The guns can be combined to form a large rifle, or mixed with the missile launchers to form a warhammer. The collector's card can be combined with your dinner table to cause temporary marital distress (verified!), so nice art aside, it is of dubious value. It is printed on nice, thick card stock in a matte finish, though. The smaller guy, Minimus Ambus, is articulated at the knees, hips, and shoulders, so he can be posed in many ways atop your larger bots. All of these poses will be annoying. This is not a criticism. This is a serving suggestion. He also transforms into a tiny Cybertronian vehicle and can sit inside Magnus' chest in robot mode. The vehicle mode is cool and futuristic, if a little generic.Ultra Magnus himself is tall, beautifully sculpted and ticks all the right transforming-robot boxes, even if you're unfamiliar with the character:[x] Poseable, well-balanced[x] Great robot mode[x] Great alt-mode[x] Heavy duty enough for play with the young'uns[x] Athletic robo-thighsYour checkboxes may differ.Magnus transforms into a fancy tractor-trailer with a permanently attached cab. The resulting vehicle is cool, if a little bit diminutive. So much of his robot mode goes into the structure of the trailer, you're left with a more-or-less deluxe-scale vehicle in the end.I find I don't mind that too much, because the transformation is a bit of an engineering marvel. It's really impressive, and it's a lot of fun. It's probably also a bit too fiddly for someone under 8 years old. I say this in earnest, as I am a 39 year-old man and probably took a couple years off my life getting this guy back to robot mode.If you're a fan of the character, the mold is satisfying as both a G1 homage and his incarnation from the IDW comic books (which I highly recommend if you're looking for comic book recommendations).UPDATE 6-30________________________Had him for a couple weeks now and it's clearly impossible to pose him with the hammer in any fashion that resembles the way normal people would hold a giant hammer. Without a swivel below the elbow or at the wrists, he has no way to wield it convincingly, outside of "Look, I have a hammer" which isn't that dynamic as poses go.It's still a great toy, but I think it's more of a solid 4 than a 5 once you add up all the little imperfections.________________________PROS • Sturdy • Great interpretation of the character for nostalgia-seekers and new fans alike • Looks good on the shelf in either mode • Fun transformation • Minimus Ambus makes a nice bonus figureCONS • Transformation challenging for the target demographic* • Lack of wrist/forearm articulation prevents Hammer Time • Hands can barely hold on to any of the accessories • Athletic robothighs can be disconcerting and bad for morale----------------*Old dudes in Thundercats onesies

I have been collecting on and off for quite some time. This was one of the figures that had to be bought as the Masterpiece Edition was out of my price range. I am happy with the size and stature of this figure as I have it displayed with Leader Class Jetfire and Masterpiece Optimus Prime.Pros:-Stature, size, presence, all are taken into account with height and proportions-Transformation is direct and fairly enjoyable. I was able to transform figure right out of box without looking at directions.-Design with attached cab works and kibble is acceptable for figure being very hollow-The figure holds together fairly well with plastic pegs. My chest plate pegs seem a little loose but I'm sure that varies figure to figure-Ratcheting knee and arm joints. One of my arms has a weaker ratchet motion than other and cannot hold a gun up. I'm sure it would be great if both arms worked properly.-Plastic coloring and paint apps were good. I do wish the Blue had been a little darker.-The play value is there for kids 8 and up I would say. I'm not sure I'd give this pricey figure to someone under 8.Cons:-Figure hand design does not allow for guns to fit in securely. There should have been a peg mounted in the palm so guns could be held. I'm sure Takara or a Third Party will fix that annoying issue. Since one of my arms cannot hold a gun up I keep a gun in right arm and secondary gun attached to peg hole in leg.-Plastic quality on arm shielding, head piece, and other areas is very thin and cheap feeling. I actually cut into the arm plating while removing one one of the plastic packaging fasteners and cut a chunk out of my Ultra Magnus arm. I was very unhappy with that as the scissors slipped and went through the plastic like it was nothing.-Quality control issues abound with loose ratchet joints, and a very poor head/truck roof design that feels like it will break easily. The cheaper plastic is used here and some force is needed to flip out head into robot position. I have concerns a child could easily break the head off.-Lack of some much needed paint applications like painted silver hubcaps. The very plain black plastic snap on wheels make the truck mode look very cheap. I will not be displaying in truck mode for any reason. I really do not think a child is going to care as this is a truck and there is room to transport other transformers on it.-The figure is very hollow in all the wrong places. I miss the days where extra attention and plastic was given priority over rush to production/reduced cost. Thanks for looking at my review.

I usually don't write reviews, but as an avid Collector I feel the need to warn others of the possible flaws with this particular figure. First of all I want to say that I absolutely love the figure. It was just about everything I could've asked for in a reasonably priced, up to date version of an all time favorite character. It lived up to all my expectations in just about every way.Unfortunately it seems that Hasbro has somewhat dropped the ball in terms of Quality Control with this particular figure. The first one I purchased had a 'stripped' ratcheting shoulder joint on the left side. While not a huge issue, it did make it difficult to pose the figure as his arm, more often than not, ended up falling to his side over time. This is something I'm sure your average buyer snagging this for his/her kid could overlook, but as a collector looking to display the figure it's unacceptable.I opted to get a replacement and Amazon shipped me out another figure. To my amazement this second figure suffered from exactly the same issue, only on the opposite shoulder. "This can't be a coincidence" I said to myself. So after doing some quick research online I found that several other buyers around the web are running into the same problem.Like I said though I love the figure. The character is a particular favorite of mine so I couldn't just not have him for my collection. I chose to get a refund for my figure and upgrade to the Takara version which, although a bit more expensive, seems to be all around better quality according to the reviews around the net. Time will tell if this is true as I won't recieve the figure for several days. Hope this review helps!
